2000-10-25 - 21:22:59 7/7/97 - Another New Home 7/7/97 - 1478 Jackson [see how rarely I was updating!] Just about moved in, three weeks after I began. I can't believe it's taken me this long to complete this move. However, I'm now resident in a fabulous new apartment on the northwest slope of San Francisco's exclusive Nob Hill. [The "fabulous" was a bit ironic even then, and not all of Nob Hill is all that exclusive: this place on Jackson is closer to the wonderfully mixed Polk Gulch neighborhood than the rarefied environs of the Pacific Union Club and Grace Cathedral.] This all happened so quickly (well, it happened quickly three weeks ago) that it might be a good idea to put down how I ended up here. Rafe and Antonio found an apartment in the Tenderloin around the second week of June. Antonio had paid all of June's rent, but Hayley and Rochelle were going to need another housemate as of July 1st. I was wondering how I was going to pay my June 15-July 15 rent at 435 14th, since I hadn't had a paycheck since I quit [the San Rafael HMO] on May 30th. John was desperate for a place to live, since crashing on his friends' sofas was beginning to wear thin. Sooo...Antonio left Jackson Street to move in with Rafe, I left 14th Street to take Antonio's place, and John moved into my old shithole of a room. It all worked out so I didn't have to pay rent 'til 7/1, by which time I was working a temp job. [What?! You quit your skull-grindingly dull job a 45-minute drive away without another job to go to? Yep. Not sure if I'd do it now.] I'm paying $25 less rent per month, with a fab view (that wasn't ironic; it really was an amazing panorama of Pacific Heights, the Golden Gate, the Bay, and Sausalito], a living room, a kitchen with a dishwasher, and two cool women housemates. It's an absolutely ideal situation for everyone. [Sigh. What we give up to move in with the ones we love. JUST KIDDING. Besides, Hayley and Rochelle kicked me out.] Oh, and location, location, location! No more crackheads smoking on the front steps. The only drawback is what to do with my car. Until I pay off all those back parking tickets, I can't get a neighborhood permit. I already got my first ticket in this 'hood today. [Problem solved by selling said heap to my mother for the exact price of the tickets. Out of my hair by the end of September if memory serves. I miss it a lot less than I thought I would.] The next priority is to get a job!!! I just finished a three-week assignment with the Red Cross, and it's been nice having a few days off, but I need to work! I wish I knew what kind of job I wanted. I keep not getting around to getting a Sunday paper. [Still not online, I see. I was very late to the Web.] [I forgot how few entries I wrote as a resident of 14th Street. Now I need a new name for this endeavor. I'm looking for a permanent name. Any ideas, fans? Either of you?] | |
