Really the last word on That Club

[Sometimes, when I read truly amazing personal sites like this, I just want to give up. Who has the time to be so smart, so well-informed, and so talented? At least the Hotsy Totsy Club has been suitably enshrined, though its future chez lui may be in doubt. And Ray's link to this funny site has wasted another morning for me. I worry: am I breaking the law in San Francisco every time I walk down the street? As Phil Donahue used to say, "Who gets to decide?"]

[So surprised last night to get a call from my friend Colleen, who lives with her girlfriend Frankie over in the Haight. Colleen and I were in junior high and high school band together, and I was her date for her senior prom. (Paraphrasing Margaret Cho on fag hags: "We went to your proms with you. We danced The Safety Dance with you.") Our contact was sporadic thru college and our 20's, but once we came out to each other (she already knew about me, but I hadn't an inkling about her), and she and Frankie moved to the city, we've hung out a few times. She remembered that my birthday is Sunday, and she and F. offered to take John and me to brunch to celebrate. I was so flattered that she remembered the date (I think hers is sometime in October...) and that she called. John and I haven't been great about keeping in touch with them, but there's no guilt and drama: they're so laid back, if we don't call each other for three months, or if we cancel on each other, it's no big deal. What a stark contrast to our other friends, whose friendship seems to have to include ongoing dramas that we, of course, help feed.]
