Whew!

[I decided yesterday to go ahead and tell my boss that I'd be leaving in August, even though I hadn't received official acceptance from New College. He seemed happy for me, shook my hand. We even joked a bit about some of our current tenants and their leases and how I'd have to come back to interpret some of the legalese. Sorry, I don't think so. Anyway, it was good to get that out of the way.]

[As I was about to leave, John called, spoke to my coworker Sara first, then got on the phone with me and asked me to come home straightaway. He had this tone in his voice that I can only describe as goofy. I went back to say good night to Sara, and she had this suspicious looking smile on her face. "What?" I said.

["I know something you don't know," she replied. "Have fun tonight."]

[Well, OK. I normally walk home from work, but I hopped on a 38L bus, and was home in ten minutes. I walked in, Patrick and John were sitting in the living room, drinking Heinekens. "You have a message," said John. Oh, all right. The voice mail was from New College. I'd been accepted without the interview. Classes start August 20th.]

[Whew! This has all happened so fast. I'm used to living life like some slow desert reptile: changing only gradually, enduring uncomfortable, or just static, situations, knowing that change does unfold on its own. Making change happen has always been a last resort. The last time I forced it was when I moved to San Francisco. Look for another period of all sorts of disorientation in this space, akin to what I wrote back then... Whoopee!]
