It's fun to stay at the...

[How random was my evening? Work-related dim sum and Chardonnay on a roof garden in the Financial District, then the groundbreaking of the new YMCA complex on the San Francisco waterfront. (Article is out of date; the Mills proposal was chosen.) John scored us tickets at the last minute to the second of those events. The keynote speaker was ex-Texas Gov. Ann Richards, who made all of us laugh so heartily at that Democratic convention when she mocked George Bush. (God, it must have been hard to lose the governorship to his twerp of a son.) I was this close, before the speeches began, to Gov. Richards, but wasn't quite able to get to her to shake her hand and exchange a few words. The other speaker was that other Texas native, our own mayor, Willie Brown. Him I had no urge to gladhand; Miz Richards praised him mightily in her speech, and John and I looked at each other askance. I keep reminding myself that, to the rest of the country, Willie seems terribly liberal. Here, we know better.]

[Whoof, too much free wine gives Huntington a wee headache this morning, though. The throbbing was made a little worse by my laughter at Camper's San Francisco Mad Lib. I've just about gotten over wondering if there's something wrong with me that I don't actually live that combination hippie-gearhead-clubkid lifestyle that overexposure to the Squid List and the Bay Guardian implies.]
