Thursday...Homeland Defense

[After a delightful "end-of-the-start-of-the-school-year" party (or something) at New College, I come home to find John watching the last 20 minutes of Bush's speech to Congress (pursed-lipped Barbara Lee and Hillary Clinton included), the Supremes (I see Rehnquist has retained his Gilbert and Sullivan gold stripes from the impeachment hearings, so theatrical), Tony Blair (!), various military folks (looking ever-so-much like extras from a road production of Evita), and a random, blonde in black whose identity I missed. I assume she was a loved one of a survivor. Hmmm...no sign of Mark Bingham's lover, who spoke so movingly earlier this week at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, to me, John, and several thousand others.]

[Ridge, the new Homeland Defense czar? Excuse me, but don't we already have a Department of Defense? (Not to mention the FBI, CIA, Bureau of AT&F, etc.) Or are we finally admitting Rumsfeld's bailiwick to be what it always has been: the Department of Offense.]

[I'm appreciating the differences between patriotism and nationalism as articulated first or second-hand by Dean and DJ. I worry that most Americans won't quite see the distinction.]

[Later: I almost peed myself laughing at Gingi's alternate names for whatever it is we plan to do. I forget to read her too often.]
