Huntington An Introduction Recently Read them instead: Political Compass: |
March 27, 2002 - 11:48 AM Phone Homo, The Sequel [Just a few thoughts before I go back to finish my appellate brief (no, I didn't finish it over spring break, yes, I'm a doo-doo):] [I was quite moved by Halle Berry, too, and that Sidney Poitier is a foxier and more inspiring septuagenarian than Sean Connery (I can get behind equal rights for blacks a lot more easily than Scottish Nationalism - not everything's about politics, Huntington...), and the Woody Allen New York thing was quite good...BUT...it may be because I haven't been nurfing the Set much since Sunday night, but where's the outrage about Ian McKellen not winning? (Ah, thanks, Nimesh) Wasn't he as much of a sure thing as Jennifer Connelley? Sure, Jim Broadbent may have been great in Iris (didn't see it, but I'm willing to believe - I thought he should've been nominated for Moulin Rouge anyway), and maybe Gandalf wasn't the acting feat of the year, but...if the Oscars are a big popularity contest anyway, and if we're shifting that emphasis to reward some egregiously overlooked minority groups, isn't it the out fags' and dykes' turn? And no, Jodie Foster and Kevin Spacey Do Not Count.] [Finally saw E.T. Monday night. Didn't bawl, but got a little misty. I think it was more for "if I knew then" regret...I actually wanted to be transported back to 1982 for a few minutes. But then I remembered, as I always do when I have these fantasies, I'd have to relive a lot of crap over which I'd have little control. I mean, who wants to see Ronald Reagan reelected again, not to mention Bush pere et fils? And I doubt there's much I could do to stop the Macarena...] [Mmmmm, wasn't McKellen's boyfriend a hottie? And why did Drew Barrymore reach the pinnacle of her acting career at age six? And after Oprah finally goes off the air, what political office will she run for? Will she content herself with the Illinois U.S. Senate seat up for grabs in 2008, or will she go whole hawg and challenge Condoleezza Rice for Prez? (Maybe Halle doesn't know what she's started...or maybe I'm just living up to the old adage "inside every gay man there's a black woman screaming to get out.") ("Just the one, dear?") These are the pop culture questions we're asking ourselves this week.] [Later: one last pop culture cluster of observations being aired around the apartment: Dudley Moore, Milton Berle...if these things come in threes, who's next? (And where's RuPaul's eulogy for Uncle Milty?) (And from the "Liza's All Fucked-Up Again Dept.": at some point, many must've thought she wouldn't have outlived both of her Arthur co-stars. More power and happiness to her...)] | |
