June 18, 2002 - 8:25 PM Go Tell It On The Mountain...Or Not... [Dean's rapturous entry and his buddy's photos of their trip to the High Sierra made me grin, but I had to wonder...why haven't I been tempted to go camping as an adult? Then I realized...I did all that as a pre-teen and teenager. And I was a transcendentalist, as he proposes, at the time. Unfortunately or not, events conspired to make me come down from the mountain, and I've lived in the world of people ever since. But I'm happy to have grown up in northern California, and to have seen the what he saw, and felt what he felt. But like certain drug and sexual experiences, I'm not sure when, if ever, I'll need to do it again.] [Speaking of being in the world, David and I are having a fun conversation about hate crimes legislation over at his message board. Won't you look in? (Come to think of it, Dean probably would feel the same way about our groping naively with political philosophy as I do about Nature: been there, done that, glad it's still there.)] | |
