On Time, Under Budget, and No Imagination

[Jesus. I know journalistic objectivity is a myth, but could this article on the Union Square reopening have been any more anti-homeless people? Unlike my supervisor, and many of the people at my school, I don't think that all of the homeless are oppressed saints. However, I also tend to read any article or speech for its commitment to solving the problem of homelessness, not the problem of homeless people. Guess into which category this falls...]

[I strolled over to the square against my better judgement yesterday in time to hear the last refrain of "San Francisco" by a reduced Beach Blanket Babylon cast. Saw Willie "You thought I was kidding about replacing the statue" Brown and Rita Moreno hobnobbing with the locals. And confirmed the impression that had been building in my mind as I walked by the construction every day for the past year or so. As Mark Shields (sans Yarnell) said, "It's a little more corporate looking than before." As in, take away the Spanish-American War monument, and it could be the legally-required open space in the middle of some anonymous South Bay office park. "Nice" isn't a compliment when talking about a 155-year old urban square.]
