Demented and Sad...But Social

[Jessica and The Dog left last night. (Before I go on, let me marvel again at how a dog, especially an insanely cute one like The Dog, makes any walk down the street into an intensely social event. There's no urban anonymity, no stealth: people come up to you, compliment and maybe pet the pooch, and look in your eyes and smile. It's amazing and a little off-putting for those of us who are used to using our invisibility as armor.) Her visit was eventful, although she was not involved in all of the events. Lessons learned:]

[Ask before washing one's boyfriend's one-of-a-kind t-shirt;]

[Panic attacks happen, but the reasons for them can be foreseen and forestalled;]

[Money is like the weather;]

[It's not that difficult to give a successful brunch, but eggs Benedict aren't a great choice if there are more than four guests and one can't face the day until 11 A.M. - a tray of (scrumptious) enchiladas works better;]

[Merlo (or, in this case, Syrah) meatballs taste better the second day;]

[Whole or halved walnuts, not the finely chopped kind, are what go in chicken salad;]

[One can be alone in a room with two friends whom one has known for fifteen and twelve years, respectively, and it can feel like none of the intervening time has passed. That can be a relief for little while, then it feels weird, and finally real life intrudes;]

[Maybe it's not such a good idea to party and socialize so much during the weekend before school starts (for him) or registration and pre-semester activities start (for me) - one needs a certain tranquility to prepare, and we don't have that today.]
