Authority and Temerity: Works For Me

["Where do three unelected federal judges get the temerity, let alone the authority, to just tell the people of California to `never mind?'" asked Pepperdine University law professor Douglas Kmiec. (As reported by the Associated Press's Anne Gearan, via How Appealing.)]

[Gee, the same place nine unelected federal judges got the authority (the temerity is up for debate) almost three years ago to tell the people of Florida and the United States the same thing. Dipshit. (Of course, the Supremes covered their asses to a certain extent in Bush v. Gore, specificallly cautioning us that its decision was specific to that case. We shall see.)]

[Things are happening so fast, I can't even think of an appropriate cliché to illustrate the mind-numbing speed. Last week, with John really sick and his and my relationship once again hanging by a thread (we've got caregiver and care-receiver issues like you wouldn't believe), I was walking down a nearby street in my neighborhood, and saw a "For Rent" sign on what must me the last freestanding house in downtown San Francisco. I'd walked past the house many times and wondered about it: it's surrounded by apartments and hotels at least six stories tall. On Friday, I pointed it out to John, and he said, "Let's call." He did, we met the landlord (who'd lowered his price and his expectations in today's dismal economy), and on Saturday, we signed a lease.]

[Our housemates will be Allen and Arthur, two guys who haven't made an appearance in this space yet, although they've been around awhile. Descriptions of those boys will follow soon in The Cast.]

[Three bedrooms upstairs, plus a basement bed-and-bath. A spacious living room with (say it with me) a working fireplace, a fine kitchen with (here it is again) a dishwasher (my first in over ten years), a two-car garage (!), and lots of those little details that make older houses just more fun to live in. If you think I'm bragging, you're probably right.]

[Aaaaaand, my internship started today. Return to CubicleLand, but it's OK; while I wouldn't have made this section of this city department my first choice, I'm already getting kind of excited by my first two assignments, roughed out between my new boss and me in an hour this afternoon. Lotsa research, into areas I know little about but to which I think I can apply skills acquired at previous jobs (who knew property management would come in handy?)]

[OK, time to take another load of books to the new place. Moving in bits and pieces, when you've got a couple of weeks and the destination is right around the corner, may be the ideal situation. Oh, I hope this is right...]
