November 05, 2003 - 9:05 AM Not Another Local Politics Entry [Well, well, well. San Francisco proves again how different we are. I remember going "oh, no" when Matt Gonzalez entered the mayoral race, further splitting the fractured Left, and giving progressive voters four viable choices. "Newsom's got it sewn up now," I thought. "Sure, Ammiano or Alioto will make it into the runoff, but this is too much for people to deal with."] [I never expected our local Green Wonder to make it this far, this fast. Stories about his campaign made it feel like lots of sound, but little substance. Both the "A's" had more money and better organization. I'm beginning to think I need to get out of the political speculation game, and go back to minding my own business.] [Or maybe I need to volunteer, and get a handle on something for which I've obviously heretofore only had a dilettante's facility. On the one hand, I'm a registered Democrat, and know Gonzalez would face an uphill battle dealing with both California's Democratic establishment and soon-to-be Republican governor; on the other hand, I love the idea of S.F. being the first big U.S. city to elect a Green mayor. A real resurgence on the Left has gotta start somewhere, right?] | |
