Opening Salvo

["This..." *sound of aerial bombing and machine gun fire* "...is San Francisco."]

[Just got back from the courthouse, where I watched a Superior Court judge deny a motion to temporarily restrain the city from granting same-sex couples marriage licenses over this Valentine's Day weekend. The motion was brought by those same lovely people who put the state law banning gay marriage on the ballot a couple of years ago. They brought today's motion too soon for the city to respond (the law says 24 hours), and the judge said they didn't show sufficient evidence that allowing the city to go forward would create enough damage to warrant an exception to the rule.]

[This says nothing about the merits of the city's defense, which one assumes will be that the state law violates the state and federal Constitutions, but for now, it's Enlightenment 1, Forces of Darkness 0.]

[(Yes, it was so cool sitting in the court room, with all the media and the city bigwigs hanging on every word. I wouldn't have gone if it weren't for my internship, and I don't know how much more of the proceedings I'll attend, but it was pretty neat being there at the very beginning.)]
