March 11, 2004 - 11:34 AM Exciting Times... [I just got word that Rafe and Antonio, who are in the midst of their annual European wanderings, were in Madrid today, but are fine; they were due to leave from Atocha station for Seville tomorrow, but now that probably won't happen.] [In addition to the usual "oh, no" feeling I assume we all get when masses of strangers die violently, I got to have something I'd yet to experience: that personalized feeling of dread, the one that has become all too familiar to too many people. I'd been lucky in that no one I knew had ever been in the path of one of these things. When I saw the headline about the train explosions in Spain this morning, I knew in my head that the odds were in R. & A.'s favor, and even had thought they might have left for Seville already. But until I got Rafe's reassuring email, I was scared.] [Rafe's email said "at least we're not having a boring vacation." I'm sorry, but give me boredom any day. I leave for London with my family (including John) tomorrow. J. and I (along with R. and A., who are meeting us in Old Smoke) plan to go to Brighton for the day next Friday, leaving from Waterloo station. Pray neither "the Real IRA" nor any other organization that has a bone to pick with the U.K. gets any funny ideas from the ETA...er, from al-Qaeda.] [At breakfast last weekend, my parents told me how they'd amended their will because Kate and I would be on the same plane as they will be this time around. OK, anyone wonder why I have the urge to climb right back in bed and pull the covers over my head?] | |
