August 24, 2004 - 4:43 PM I Knew Gold Lamé Corselets Were Due For A Comeback [Whoa, here I was getting all optimistic about the Nov. election, and I make my occasional visit to the Electoral Vote Predictor. Yeah, Kerry's ahead, but look how many states are "barely Kerry," according to recent polls. That list includes California! Eep! Here we've all been concentrating on convincing our swinging neighbors, and it could happen that the Gilded-Lily State could surprise us. That would really suck some especially putrid swamp water... (Update, 8/25: OK, I buy the webmaster's guess as to why the poll might not be the dark imagining it initially appeared to be. Makes all this polling seem so chaotic; yet politicians live and die by the tricky things.)] ****************** [OK, Bimbo's 365, Sunday: the weirdest show I've ever seen, and that includes the Del Rubio Triplets twice in one day back in college. Bond are four good-time, big-haired sheilas who wear trashy, Susannah-Hoffs-esque, pastel minidresses with wide gold lamé belts...and play violin, viola, and cello, mostly while your worst "Hooked On Classics" syrupy-synth backing track booms and whines. Violet was gifted with six free tix to the show (or "concert," as one of the, um, Bond girls called it), and I went with a couple of acquaintances from the writer's group and the redoubtable Mr. Lucky.] [Some experiences require something more than alcohol, and that was our sole mood alterer. So, after we'd had enough, Lucky suggested we adjourn for more drinks as LaRocca's Corner, a nonhip North Beach dive. Well, nonhip, yes; but we managed to eke coolness from the jukebox with choices ranging from Louis Prima to Bananarama to AC/DC. Hot.] ****************** [All that while fitting in three days working at the Friendly Neighborhood Cabaret, including a benefit last night. The weekend burlesque is drawing packed houses, and that's good, because the featured performers aren't burning it up. We're hoping Grizabella (or Abby Bradford) does better for us next month...] ****************** [No, no real job yet.] | |
