April 23, 2005 - 1:14 PM Divas, Divas Everywhere and Plenty of Martinis to Drink [This Sharon McNight run at the Friendly Neighborhood Cabaret has been a hoot. She knows her crowd (hint: it starts with G-A-Y), and is channeling three classic Betties: Grable, Davis, and Hutton. Mom and Annabelle came down last week, A. toting an ancient, signed piece of Sophie Tucker sheet music; la McNight (who is a Sophanatic) was pleased. She makes every effort to out-diva her predecessors; she isn't always pleased, and makes sure no one else is either.] [Then last night, it was a pleasure to see and seat Bill and his new beau. They got to watch me scuttle like a decapitated chicken trying to shoehorn an oversold room. (Leah and I hid in the box office when we heard a nerve-jangling rumor that the fire marshal was slowly cruising by the Cute Vic.) The Mermaniac looked exactly like he's s'posed to - Aloha shirt perfectly in place. He fit in exactly; besides Sharon's renditon of the Grable "classic" "O'Brien Has Gone Hawaiian," I counted three other gents in Hilo Hattie apparel. I hadn't seen Bill since what was, as far as I know, the first ever BayGay-plus-George blog meet-up just before "everything changed." (Love that those boys have left that link up for 3 1/2 years. I can't believe I used that much hair gel.)] [Next up at the FNC: lots of smaller names with big voices, until Lea DeLaria the third week of May. OMG!!!1!!! You should totally come!!!!!] | |
