Vaya con Dios, dandy Sandy

[While I'm not thrilled, either, by dandy Sandy O'Connor's announcement, I think the moans of impending doom need to be tempered a smidge. First, the woman's not Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I know it can be confusing with the lace neckpieces and all, but with practice, the two can be distinguised. As I told a lot of people who waxed rhapsodic at the death of Byron "Whizzer" White, this justice has been the swing vote on just as many pernicious decision as she has good ones.]

[One example will suffice: Bush v. Gore. O'Connor helped hand over the presidency to the man who will pick her successor. She didn't have to follow the Scalia/Thomas junta down that road, but she did. She'll only have herself to thank when her replacement overturns Casey, Roe, and (for all we know), Griswold, Loving and Brown. After all, civil rights are up to the states, right?]

[Are we fucked? Of course we are. But we've been fucked for a long time before this. Nothing's really changed.]
