October 25, 2005 - 12:24 PM Making Me Happy This Week [1. Capote, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Um, wow. What little footage I've seen of Truman Capote leads me to think P.S.H. absolutely captured every nuance. Watching the tightrope-walk as he researched and wrote In Cold Blood was harrowing. I think I would've imitated my idol Gore Vidal in disliking Capote personally because he was such a spontaneous and convincing liar. But what a thing to watch.] [2. My date for Capote. A new friend, or a little bit more than a friend? Who knows, and right now, I don't really need to know. He's a magnificent fellow with whom I have more in common than almost anyone I can name. And he likes my smile; good thing, since he kept eliciting it.] [3. My job. My dream? No. But an intimate, friendly setting, work that's challenging but I'm getting it, and more money than I've made since quitting my job to go to law school in 2001. 'Twill serve admirably.] [4. The time I've been spending in the Mission District, Noe Valley and Bernal Heights neck of the woods. Has my time as a downtown boy come to an end? Ask me in a month or two.] [5. I'm going to Seattle again in early December. This makes me very, very happy. The acceptance of an almost year-old invitation will finally be fulfilled. No matter how it actually goes, I'm really looking forward to it.] [I'm way past broke, there are all kinds of issues looming, I haven't heard from Jessica since last Thursday, and a friend's going through a bad patch down south, but...] [Later: After digging through my badly clogged email inbox, I found Jess's brother's address, contacted him, and found out she's fine and will be coming back to Cali tomorrow. She spent the weekend in a shelter, where she probably made three new friends, flirted with a boy or two, and cadged a few recipes.] | |
