December 01, 2005 - 12:47 PM Ten Musical Moments That Still Give Me A Dorky Thrill
[I'm such a mainstream music-lover. I bet I could get an "Amen" from most people for most of these...] [1. The "aaahhh...baby!" in "Don't Leave Me This Way." Harold Melvin, Thelma Houston, Jimmy Somerville...doesn't matter. 2. The shrieking wrath of the opening notes of "Dies Irae" from Mozart's Requiem. 3. The "tst tst tst tst...bkrowww" in New Order's "Blue Monday." 4. The sheer number of notes, and their ebb and flow, in Jobim's "Waters of March." I like Paula West's version because a. I've seen it live so many times, and b. I can understand the words. 5. "Not to put too fine a point on it/Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet/Make a little birdhouse in your soul." 6. "For Unto Us A Child Is Bo-oo-ooo-OO-ooo-rn" in Handel's Messiah, the last singalong of which here in San Francisco is this week. 7. The B-52's' "Dirty Back Road," which I've loved forever, and have only realized is even more full of filthy innuendo than I'd thought. 8. Those crazy mariachi trumpets in "Ring of Fire." 9. "Pleeeease...give me something to siiiing about!" Yes, Buffy. Of course! 10. "Can you hear them talk about us/Telling lies, well that's no surprise." Charlotte's 16 year old cat Go-Go needs to go the vet today. Charlotte (whose actual name is that of a different Go-Go) didn't name the animal for the girls, but I like to pretend she did.] [Yes, a lot's happened in the last week, including bringing Chris to Sonoma as my Thanksgiving potluck treat; going with Allen and Carrie to Sing-A-Long Sound of Music on Monday night; my boss returning from Europe under personal siege; being large and in charge at the writer's studio on Tuesday; and getting ready to head up to Seattle tomorrow, but I'd rather make lists.] Previously Next |
