Thankful, Part the Second

[Or maybe, Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week:]

[1. White Teeth by Zadie Smith, which I've been wanting to read for years and which, thanks to Max's good offices, I've finally read. Funny, complex but not difficult, and informative. I can see why she was so touted at the time. I'm glad I finished it just in time to pick up her new one.]

[2. Ward 86 at San Francisco General Hospital. Good care, reasonably priced, for those of us between coverages and who really need to be seen. They couldn't do much for this nagging back-muscle pull I seem to have acquired (yep, too much ho-de-o-do-do on a bad mattress; for once, your gutter imagination is correct), but for the other stuff that's never gonna go away, just fine.]

[3. Chris. Just 'cause I haven't mentioned him in this post yet. He sees a problem, he looks for a solution, and he makes it happen. This is so unusual in my experience (I'm as guilty as anyone) that I can't quite believe it.]

[4. Payday's tomorrow. Whew...]

[5. The conspiracy out on the streets and among my acquaintances to make me smile. OK, people, is this some kind of subtle Christmas present or something? The world's full of bad news, but I walk down the street and a kid waves at me from a car, or an old friend finds her name in my blog archives and emails hello, or some damned bird twitters just the right tune and doesn't poop on me.]

[It's happening all the time, not that I don't stump grumpily up Vermont Street to work because the 27-Bryant bus (that foul tease) made me fifteen minutes late again. But, world: thanks. This has been a year of low lows and only a few high highs, and I can see someone noticed and put in a Cheer-Up work order in the Great Contractor's Office in the Sky.]
