February 09, 2006 - 9:57 AM Master Narratives: Furniture
[I know, I know; the Danish cartoon controversy is so two days ago. But it took me until today to realize that the basic issue is simply one of furniture design.] [I mean, think about it. Danish Modern furniture is all about modern, clean lines, while furnishings from the Arab/Muslim world are much more intricately decorated. I think this is because the Muslims aren't allowed to create images of Allah or His Prophets (blessed be their names or whatever), so, as in Arabic calligraphy, furniture gets all ornate with curlicues and stuff.] [Danes, being Lutherans, are allowed to portray all the members of the Trinity (even the Holy Spirit gets some face time, usually as a dove or a ray of light), so they're free to make spartan chairs and sofas without adornment...or comfort.] [Spare modernism vs. ornate decoration. They were bound to clash.] Previously Next |
