[A most astounding quote from Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire today in the wake of that state's Supreme Court's ruling upholding their version of DOMA:] ["As to my personal beliefs, Mike and I received the sacrament of marriage in the Catholic faith," she said. "State government provided us with certain rights and responsibilities, but the state did not marry us."] [Gov. Gregoire, as a governor, you should be aware already that the state very much DID "marry" you. Marriage is a legal term, regardless of what your religion says or does. Is the confusion surrounding this matter really as simple as the two different meanings of "marriage" that exist in the United States? Sure, those differences are of relatively recent vintage, but don't most intelligent people know the difference between civil and religious marriage? I'm beginning to wonder.] Previously Next |
