August 10, 2006 - 11:12 AM My Week So Far [1. Ate the summer's most delicious burger so far on Tuesday at Couleur, a new-ish, French-ish joint down there in Showplace Square by the new Culinary Academy campus. The place is made of something like corrugated aluminum, and conforms to the property lines, shaped by the old train tracks that used to run through the neighborhood. Trapezoidal real estate excites me. Boss-man paid for lunch. I had Brie on mine. I'm a triple-creme whore, and am not ashamed.] [(1.5. Speaking of fromage, btw, the most tasteless announcement made repeatedly last weekend at the river: Allen telling anyone who would listen that he makes his own cheese. Betty Ford has his double-wide all reserved, but they can't make him make the call.)] [2. Felt very vividly Monday's 4.4 earthquake centered not that far from my parents' house. I was mulling ramifications of item #3 below when a three- or four-second rattler hit. Every once in a while, Mother Nature offers a dose of perspective when it's needed most. (No; the quake was Friday. Goes to show where my mind's been this week. How nice for it to send me a postcard...)] [3. Certain illusions were shattered. Probably past time they were. Cobwebs can be pretty, but they gather dust.] [4. Took a much needed mental health day yesterday. I don't often have days where I feel I just can't leave my apartment one more time for the same old place, but there I was yesterday at about 8:30, calling Charlotte. No big deal at work, and once I decided to live, I did get a couple of things done.] [5. Turned down an offer of shared housing with a guy I've known for a while. It's downtown in a beautiful old building, the guy and I get along fine, it would cut my rent by over two hundred dollars, and there'd be a cute pet involved. Why no? The guy makes his living in a way that would be extremely foolish for me to be around. The fact that I even considered it for a minute says a lot.] [6. Heartened by that backstabbing schmuck Lieberman's defeat in the Democratic primary. Hear that, Joe? Democratic primary. Not Lieberman primary. You were that party's nominee for V.P. six years ago, Joe; way to show the love in return. Let us not forget that Ol' Floppy-Face wasn't defeated by a spontaneous workers' uprising to smash that insect or whatever that feeds on the masses. Lamont's a major Connecticut capitalist, and part of me thinks he's only anti-Iraq war because his corporation doesn't have an angle in keeping it going. This cynical tone is something I've acquired since leaving Radcliffe.] [7. Did my dishes at the beginning of the week and have managed to keep the kitchen tidy if not totally sanitary thru this morning. Swept, didn't mop. Hey, to each his own triumphs.] | |
