Let's Get Some Noodles

[Discovered today: Yamo Burmese Restaurant, 3400 18th St. nr. Mission. Makes your favorite hole-in-the-wall look huge: you sit at the counter or you don't sit. The family makes one dish at a time as you watch, since that's all there's room for. BUT...the food. And the prices. I've never had anything like the Tea Salad...salty, crunchy, yes, but with that something extra that lets you know you're eating an ingredient you've never eaten before (tea?). A huge plate so three can share is $5.95.]

[Then...Boss Man had warm chicken on cold noodles, Charlotte had curry chicken (she chose noodles instead rice), and I had pork on the (hot) house noodles. Order the delicate and flavorful chicken; the pork was a might too salty and I'm not sure about the cooking time. I'll let you know if I die of trichonosis; if I do, it was worth it. All entrees come for that magic number of $5.95. (No mohingga on the menu; they don't have the infrastructure to keep a pot of fish stew bubbling all day.)]

[As you know, this isn't my dream job*, but Boss Man does spring for lunch at least half the time. He read last Sunday's Chronicle Magazine's Cheap Eats guide, and seems inclined to drag Char and me to as many of the editor's choices as practicable. Yum!]

[*However, I have accomplished a couple things here in the last week or two that have given me a shy but unmistakable shot of self-esteem. Don't tell anyone.]

[Later: Pete just called me from Chicago; he and the huzzband just got back from a gay cruise to the Mediterranean. (Yes, yes; a "gay cruise" is one that has sex with other cruises; and no, I don't plan on going on one anytime soon, even if I could afford it). They had a couple of days in Greece before setting sail, and took my recommendation to do a day trip to Hydra. I'm relieved that they loved it, since I recommended it without considering that while the ferry ride is magnificent, there isn't that much to do in the port but shop for the same knicknacks you can buy in Athens, eat overpriced food, and step around donkey manure. My memories are so tied up with late nights and early mornings there both alone and with my law school friends. Mmmmm...Hydra. One day I shall return thither.]
