November 08, 2006 - 10:25 AM Great Expectations [Just was in the car getting breakfast for me and Charlotte when I heard Bush fire Rumsfeld in a verrrry panicky sounding press conference. That proves this election was much more than a midterm horse-changing.] [A couple of other instances in the wake of the election when you could actually see me pumping my fist in the air like I just di'n't care:] [Arizona turning down writing bigotry into its constitution;] [Missouri being sane about stem cell research and electing Claire McCaskill, who sounds verrrry sane;] [South Dakota rejecting its Neanderthal legislature's abortion ban;] [The House, of course. Pelosi's got a lot of work to do;] [My own state voting down a similarly Neanderthal parental notification initiative, and approving a bunch of bond measures that will throw more money at California rickety infrastructure than has been thrown since the '60s;] [Finally, my representative on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, the controversial anger-management poster-boy Chris Daly, was re-elected despite the best efforts of the moneyed establishment. Daly's not someone I'd want to have lunch with, and some of his policy initiatives have been reeeetarded, but in my district, there's just no question in my mind that someone who cares more about fixing the root causes of those icky "quality of life" issues than masking their symptoms is the one who belongs in power. And Daly is it.] [All in all, this was a good election day. We'll see...there are a lot of expectations out there, and we all know where expectations too often lead.] | |
