January 20, 2007 - 11:17 AM Not A Competitor, An Ally [It's nice and all that Barack Obama reacted to Hillary Rodham Clinton's formation of an exploratory committee by calling her not a competitor but an ally. However, at some point he's going to have go mano a mano with her, and all the rest. Unlike most other idle speculators, I don't think we've reached a permanent steady state where we can stack the contenders like carved figures on a totem pole: Clinton-Obama-Edwards and then on down. Last time around, John Kerry was just one of the crowd whose oxygen was being sucked by Howard Dean and Wesley Clark, all the way until Iowa.] [Yes, yes; daunting financials balanced by hate on the left as well as on the right. Me, I think Hill's natural place has always been on the Supreme Court; however, she's "in to win," so I think she'd make a fine president, too. But compared the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania, who wouldn't?] [There's still a long, twisty road for both parties. And, of course, for us. Something's bound to happen to mix things up between now and next spring. But then I'm known for my eerie lack of prescience when it comes to electoral politics.] [Later: I just read Mr Moulitsas's Friday musings on the primary contenders, and I agree with him. (I don't always.) Which means, as I said, that it's just too soon.] **************** [I know it's not fair when bloggers are oblique about personal stuff. Either spill the beanz, or just shut up, right? Well, too bad; I'm facing a dilemma this weekend. I know what I should do, and I know what I want to do, and I'm feeling a little emotional about the conflict. OK, a lot.] [It's never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. I've done that today, and am a bit of a basket case as a result.] **************** [Last night at Dolores House: Boboli topped with sun-dried tomato pesto, crumbled basil feta, sliced Kalamata olives, a layer of mozzarella, spinach leaves, another layer of mozzarella, and a sprinkling of paprika. A repeat of Wednesday's The Daily Show and The Colbert Report with Bill O'Reilly as guest. Then home to bed. It's been a great week for spending time with friends. And, of course, food.] **************** [After dinner, I was in the 24th Mission BART station waiting to be whisked back downtown when I noticed that I'd missed calls from both my mom's and sister's cell phones. I hadn't thought the family were going to be back from Mexico for a few more days, so I immediately panicked. Something must've happened!] [My morbidity-worry scale went like this:] [1. Something happened to the Niece Audrey; [It took all my willpower to wait until I emerged at Powell Street to check my voicemail, since I get no bars in the tunnel. Everyone was fine; they both just called to say they'd gotten home safely. This isn't S.O.P. with my family when we go on trips, so maybe you can understand my worry. My relief, and gladness that they both thought to call within ten minutes of each other, is making me think a bit.] **************** [Well, lookee; it's a beautiful day outside. I think I'll go out and enjoy it. Screw my dilemma, or rather, not screw (there's your hint); there are other baskets.] | |
