Oh, And There Was Really Cool Thunder And Lightning And Hail Last Night

[Memo to my neurotic Pisces friends as your 30s fade away: get over yourselves. My mother's turning 65 on April 1st, and is planning to burn her Medicare card in effigy during a gourmet hamburger party. She doesn't really feel old - she gives the concept some voice, but we can tell she's still the 26-year-old she's always been.]

[Take a tip from Carol: a man is in the prime of his life between 36 and 43. Enjoy it, dammit!]

[Two fun-filled weekends have now passed without a note here. Quickly: weekend-before-last was Santa Barbara. Stayed at Max's cuuuute pad on the Riviera and was treated to blueberry pancakes from scratch, vodka cocktails, and KCRW; Jessica drove up from L.A. just to see me; and I realized again that driving alone down a sunny highway playing my music makes me really happy.]

[Last weekend I spent mostly with my parents. We played tourist at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39: Blue and Gold cruise around the bay, arcade games, the carousel...it was fun for an hour or so, but I can't believe some visitors never get away from that tourist trap. We didn't "play" tourist, I guess; we were tourists in a strange, strange land...any resemblance to San Francisco was purely coincidental.]

[Dinner that night was at Brick, a chi-chi joint near the Friendly Neighborhood Cabaret that Mom and I had been to once last year and wanted to try on Dad. He loved it, but I did discover something I hadn't known about Mom and Dad. Now, it's not news that people let slip things they normally hold inside when they drink a bit, but you never know what kinds of things people in their cups will let fall from their slurring mouths. It can be revelatory and even amusing if it's not totally appalling or just very inconvenient.]

[In my parents' case, it's my history with l'amour that they each decided to discuss. I hadn't thought they'd even noticed I'd had a romantic life...boy, they've noticed, and have very definite opinions about some figures from my past, and have a sincere concern or two about my future, too. I smiled and nodded and ordered another Cosmopolitan...]

[Sunday was the Oscars with them, my sister, brother-in-law, and the Most Advanced and Most Cutest Niece Ever. (How does she do it?) Pizza. Wine. The Departed, which I did enjoy very much at the time. Pleasant. Done.]

[Other than that, life is about work, with some play here and there. I'm doing a lot more around here, and Boss-Man seems appreciative. We need another hand, though, and sooner rather than later.]

[I realized recently that I've never owned a pet, and I wondered if that should worry me. However, what with the roommate's dachshund, Boss-Man's Ridiculously Large Mastiff (who comes to work) and the Dog Bruno whenever I go to Dolores House, I get enough time with non-humans, and while my duties occasionally include cleaning up doody, I never have to pay a vet bill.]

[I think I'd be up for a houseplant, though. One that's easy to care for, mind you...]

[That's all...]
