Not To Brag, But...

[Ahem.]

[Six months ago to the day I predicted that come November, we'd see John McCain facing Barack Obama. And here we are.]

[I suppose I could've done my little not-to-brag a while ago, but I wanted to wait until it was certain. I believe Obama really had this sewn up not long after Super Tuesday. It's been a long six months, and while I supported Clinton in the California primary, my impression of her can't help but have gone down. It's been an ugly, overly dramatic six months, too.]

[At this point, I agree with those who wish she'd just go away for a while. I think it would be a terrible mistake for Obama to name her his running mate, and I really doubt it will happen. HHS Secretary, or health care czar? Sure. I think she's quite qualified for the Supreme Court, too, but things I've been reading lately lead me to believe that the life of an Associate Justice might not suit her temperament. She's doing fine, mostly, in the Senate, too. Even if she does go away now, you know she's not done yet.]

[As far as Obama goes, I'm thrilled. It does mean a hell of a lot for the first black man to be nominated by one of the major parties. I'm still skeptical about whether his candidacy represents Change, or a passing of the torch to...who? Generation X? Y? Away from the boomers, anyway, but... The boomers are going to be around for a good long time, at least as long as the generation preceding them has been, so I'm not convinced, as some seem to be, that anyone born before 1960 has become politically and culturally irrelevant and might as well pack it up.]

[And I do worry that Obama's antecedent won't be JFK (not that he was any great shakes as president), but Jimmy Carter: no one can fulfill the kind of deep, undifferentiated Hope that Obama's instilling in people. If Obama doesn't begin producing soon, and producing big, in the face of an entrenched Washington that likes things just the way they are, the disappointment currently being hurled at Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid's small Congressional majority will look tiny by comparison.]

[But I'm done predicting, except that I feel cautiously optimistic that Barry will indeed win in November. Beyond that...Yes We Can. But will we?]
